Beans, beans, beans ...

Approximately 2 weeks ago, we planted bean seeds in ziploc bags so that we could see the life cycle of a bean plant in action. The beans germinated slowly (and some not at all). Little by little, the plants got bigger, the seed coats fell off, and leaves unfurled. It was exciting to check the progress of the plants every couple of days, recording the changes on observation sheets. One poor set of beans even turned into a zombie. Gotta love third grade humor!

Science ... up close and personal!

In science, we have been studying the parts of plants and what they need to survive. To learn about the capillary action involved in bringing water from the plant's up through it's stem, we placed celery and a gerbera daisy into bottles of colored water. The color began to show up in the center of the daisy within minutes. The celery took quite a bit longer. We started at 9:20 Friday morning. By the end of the day, the daisy had blue at the end of all of its petals, and the center was quite blue. The celery had just a little red showing at the tips of the leaves. By Monday, the kids were amazed to see the drastic change in the celery. The leaves were more red than green and a good portion of the red water had "disappeared". We cut the celery apart to see the path of the red water. The daisy had gotten a bit darker blue, but the change wasn't as dramatic. The students did a great job recording in their science notebooks the changes of the celery and daisy throughout the experiment.

International Walk to School Day

Here they come! It was a beautiful morning for the Walk to School Day. The kids weren't just walking, but running, as they came down the path this morning! They were met by students and teachers cheering them on.

I managed to corral most of the students at the end of the walk to take a few pictures. First a "good" one ...

and then a "goofy" one. What a crazy group of walkers!

Creativity in the Classroom

During September, the students were very busy being creative. They have drawn favorite summer activities,

drawn bus safety posters,

written "Who Am I?" riddles,

made Personality Portrait collages,

painted autumn leaf prints,

and created pattern block designs with certain "dollar" amounts.

Our hallway and classroom have become quite colorful!
