On March 21st. the third graders (along with the rest of the elementary students) sang and danced their hearts out. They sang "Polly Wolly Doodle" and danced to "Boot Scootin' Boogie" and did a terrific job at both! Their artwork was also on display throughout the gym. I really enjoyed coming back to see them perform. :)

Can You Hear Me Now?
As part of our unit on sound, we made cup telephones. The students enjoyed making them and trying to talk to each other using them. They figured out that several sets could be crossed to make a group conversation. It's always fun for me to see their eyes light up when they realize that they really can hear what the person on the other end of the line said.

12-12-12
12-12-12 is a once in a lifetime date. We had lots of fun noticing when the number 12 appeared throughout our day (time of day, math answers, etc.). We took a "good" pic and a "crazy" pic. You can decide which one is which!

Artwork inspired by Vincent Van Gogh
Last week, we read two books about Vincent Van Gogh and looked at several examples of his artwork. The students chose what medium they'd like to use to make a piece inspired by Van Gogh. They got right to work, using acrylic and watercolor paints, oil pastel crayons, colored pencils, and markers.
Here are some of the finished products.

A guest speaker, F&V Derby, and spelling words
November 9 - We enjoyed hearing from a guest speaker, David Lien. He talked to the kids about mountain climbing, setting goals and trying to achieve them, and his adventure of attempting to climb Mt. Everest. After the talk, he allowed the students to try on some of his gear.
Nov. 16 - We celebrated the end of our nutrition unit with a Fruit and Veggie Derby. The kids worked in teams to create a vehicle to "race" down a ramp.
Team 1 - the Funky Fruits
Team 2 - the Grapesters
Team 3 - the Bouncing Bananas
Team 4 - the Derby Girls
Team 5 - the Banana-mobile
Team 6 - the Vicious Riders
After the first race attempts, the students went "back to the drawing board" and modified their vehicles before racing again.
The white strips mark where the vehicles ended up. The strip of the car that went the farthest is way off to the right of the photo. It really rolled!
